I store potatoes in the cupboard and onions in the fridge, though I should probably put the onions in the cupboard too.

I've had a few yellow onions in my fridge for a month and my potato's last until I use them..

Same here even though, as you wrote, 'they' say not to. It's just too warm here and pests could be a problem I think so pretty much everything is sealed up or in the frig/freezer.

In the coolness of the stairwell to the basement, in a hanging cooper mesh basket to allow for airflow!

Onions and Potatoes will last longer in a fridge around 40 degrees Fahrenheit for a year with no regrowth of new leaves , except the onions may not be as pungent as they were when they were fresh , and the potato's may be drier as they get older in the fridge , but they will last three times longer in the fridge than in a warm place in the house

We have a wooden cabinet with two bins- the doors have a heavy steel screen mesh for airflow. We usually keep them in the garage which stays 45-55deg until end of June-Oct, then we keep them in the kitchen in the kitchen under the window a/c unit.

Onions in the fridge drawer. Potatoes I don't store. I buy what I need the day I'm going to use them.

I used to store them in my dark pantry years ago. Until a bag of taters got pushed back and something else was placed in front of them. A few weeks (months?) later, something smelled AWFUL .... then I found the mush.

There is almost nothing worse than rotted, soupy potato slop in your cupboard. (I once had someone tell me that rotted vegetables don't smell, to which I replied, "Have you ever smelled rotted potatoes?"

Separately in the pantry. Onions in the bottom section. Potatoes in the top section.

I keep them in a cabinet, in the bags, on separate shelves.

What's the reason for not storing them together?

Onion can transfer the smell to the potatoes.

I go to the market almost daily so we never have more than a couple of these. When we do need to clear off the counters, potatoes and onions go in open bowls in lower cabinets.
