I have always liked liver and onions. Adults in my family couldn't believe that a child would enjoy the dish. Prepared correctly, it makes the day better than it was.
Lately, our local market has been selling chicken livers in a 20 oz. container for $1.99 That's plenty for me to have four (or five) meals.
Offal is always cheap because so many people say "ewwww". Poor people have always been able to survive on the parts of animals at which the "rich" turned up their noses. And for the most part have made it palatable.
Most of the time, the only way to get beef or calf liver is frozen in pound packages. I cook the entire pound and after a really good accompaniment of mashers, creamed corn and a small salad, I put the rest in the fridge and snack on it cold.
Five years old.
Cannot even take a taste of liver without gagging.
Parents obviously having a bad day.
Being made to sit at the table until finishing the liver on my plate.
8:00 pm comes and I can go, no liver for me!
Or ever again.
I suppose I should give it another go after all these decades, but that memory remains stronger than the smell of liver and onions. Ewwww.
