So for the first time in my 51 years, I'm seeing ads on TV for Blue Bunny Ice Cream. I've never tried it, but I've seen it mentioned a LOT - both on other message boards and from friends/acquaintances in other parts of the country.

What is the deal with it? What is it that makes it so (apparently) special? And yes, I've considered the fact that I could maybe just have friends/acquaintances who are wingnuts.

Yes, wondering about ice cream is, in fact, keeping me up tonight.

It's just your basic ice cream brand, like any other midrange grocery-store available ice cream. Not store brand in a plain cardboard carton that comes in vanilla, strawberry, chocolate or Neapolitan, but also not small batch tubs of artisan/gourmet, either. Just a mass marketed brand somewhere between the two.

Wells Blue Bunny ice cream based in LeMars, Iowa, a small town up near the far NW corner of the state. I've visited, taken a tour there, and it is widely available in grocery stores in the surrounding Midwest region. It is a pretty large operation, not a small specialty outfit. They also make the original red, white, and blue "Bomb Pop" that ice cream trucks and concession stands often sell.

Agreed, OP. In the past 2-3 years I've come across more people raving about this brand. It's odd to me because it's nothing special, IMO. It's like Breyers, edys, etc. Basic grocery store ice cream.

Count me in as one who just doesn't get it. We tried it because people were raving about it. Blah! None of us found it anything special. I'll stick to Hood for my not fancy pants but still tastes awesome ice cream fix.

I don't think it is great ice cream. Tillamook ice cream is much better and usually close to the same price. But blue bunny does come in many interesting flavors, so maybe that is where the enthusiasm comes from. It is defiantly better ice cream than the cheap brands.

Isn't blue bunny the one that had all the recalls from bad sanitation in their plant? That would worry me about buying their product.

No, that's Texas-based Bluebell. Two totally different, unrelated brands.

They've had at least two high-profile instances of listeria contamination, at least one where people died where I am locally.

Not Blue Bunny, though. Totally unrelated, like Breyers and Dreyers.

One reason Blue Bunny may be getting more intensive ad campaign exposure is because is apparently now the third-largest ice cream maker in the country, acc. to Wikipedia:

Quote:
Wells is the third largest ice cream maker in the United States, with five percent market share behind Nestlé, (Dreyer's, Mövenpick) and Unilever (Breyers Ice Cream).
Also the largest manufacturer that has retained family ownership.

Blue Bell is excellent. Blue Bunny is your typical supermarket ice cream that is usually cheap.

It's a marketing tactic. Apparently it works.

I had to try it and like the rest of you found it to be the average, run-of-the mill ice cream.

We do have Quick Trip stores here in southern MN that have a well kept secret, though. Their brand of ice cream is called "Nature's Choice" and it is cheap and very rich and flavorful.
