The other day after I took out the preheated dutch oven and put it on the stove top, lid taken off, I forgot the lid was hot, and used my bare hand to pick up the lid, burned my finger.
Are there tips for preventing burning your hands while doing baking? Of course oven mitts, but what I mean is tips to remember the pot/lid that has been taken out of the oven is still very hot, or any other way to prevent being burned because of lack of attention.
Cover the handles on both lid and pot with a double- or triple-folded dry kitchen towel. This will remind you the pot is hot, or protect your hands in case you forget. It's important that the towel be dry. Wet conducts heat.
I recently purchased these neoprene like grips that are meant to be used on Dutch oven pans while on top of the stove. They fit right over the handles (or the lid) so now when I take something out of the oven, or while it's cooking on top of the stove, I put those on immediately. It's kind of like the kitchen towel suggestion above but these are small and can be used to handle the hot pans or lids. The name of these is Kitchen Grips and I think they sell them on Amazon for about $7.00 a pair.
I bought a caldo pan with metal handles and burned myself twice before investing in these. Yeah, you'd think we'd learn but old habits die hard!
I've burnt everything over the years. These days it's usually not from picking something hot up, but from the top of my hand or arm touching the top shelf when I'm taking something out. Definitely, oven mitts would take care of most of that, but I don't have any, and no ultra considerate relative or friend has given me any for a gift! Say no more!

That's what I do, except I take out the pot/pan with potholders--one or two depending on how big the pot is and whether it has a handle--and just leave the potholders draped over the lid and/or handle.
Everyone who bakes at all will eventually burn some fingers, but hopefully that's all.
