Their best days were probably when they had the commercials on TV with the guy (Jarod), and were getting a lot of business. Everything's probably languished since then. No vision? No focus on quality? Just let things roll on? I don't eat there often, but it does seem like I used to enjoy going there more than compared to the last 6 years or so. Just really bland to me know.
As a vegetable lover, I've always loved the Subway concept, but unfortunately there are so many franchises that the quality varies to the point that I usually think twice before going there. (So much disappointing stale bread since they started pushing the toasted sub concept, and some locations put out unfresh or unripe looking spinach, tomatoes, and cucumber)
I love the spicy italian, which I load with bell peppers, spinach and lettuce, tomatoes if they're red not orange, red onion, olives, pepperoncinis, sometimes cucumber, and mustard. It ends up a generous sandwich, and enough meat for me.
If they're in trouble, I sure can't tell by the number of locations around here.
In my area,it's not that the food isn't fresh . It's that you need a microscope to prove there is any product on the bread!
We have 4 sub shops that are more then willing to pile on the meats and fixings. Subway just needs to answer the calling to not skimp on the product.
Each subway is different with different ingredients. I don't know if they are franchised but if they are not this is a huge deal. Their sales may be slowing down b/c the fast food places have a lot of sales and even though it is probably worse for you I am guessing they are taking some of their business. And the whole thing with Jared (spokesman) being a child molester left a bad taste in people's mouth.
Personally, I think there are a lot of other chains that are in worse trouble, including the media darling Chipotle which is back to poisoning people, this time in Los Angeles:

I think having Jarod as one of their spokespersons is definitely one of the reasons why the business is hurting. Jarod was the center of Subway's marketing campaign for a large part of the 15 years he was involved with Subway. Probably one of the biggest PR disasters that could happen to a company.
I never understood why someone would go to a Subway instead of a real deli. I guess the same reason people go to Papa John's or Pizza Hut instead of a real pizza shop. Maybe they become familiar with what they get and don't want to take a risk of trying something else?
Some people are snobs who would rather eat and shop at corporate chains than homegrown businesses or lesser known establishments. Others are sheep who choose a chain just because they see it plastered everywhere. In my neighborhood, I had four Subways within a 5 to 15 minute walking distance. I just ignored them but I could see some people choosing one over the local delis because of how overbearing a presence they had.
Because Americans have become so much more sophisticated?
