Just like the Florida citrus industry died after citrus canker was spread all over the state by 4 hurricanes in 2004 or by the new one, "greening". Other than never getting my business ever again, that industry seems to be doing fine.

The last few times I've bought one, they go bad fast. So I stopped buying them.

Don't buy soft avocados or ones with brown or black spots because you don't know if they have ripened properly or are overripe and about to go bad. They should still be solid green and hard. Let them ripen on your kitchen counter. You can also keep them--still hard and green--in the refrigerator and take one out a few days before you will want to use it.

Well, I've been in grocery stores several times since I first noticed this thread, and I continue to see big heaps of avocados for sale. I question the existence of this purported shortage.

totally agree with you. Though they are a bit pricey, I still see plenty. We got, nice, solid with a nice even green skin on them yesterday at Aldi's for $.89 each. they were not huge which is fine with us, as there are only 2 of us, but they were not really small either.

Never tasted one of those Hall Avocados that tasted good...maybe they're good locally but when I've bought them, I had to throw them away every time. Give me the fat Haas please.

Good avocados have a wonderful buttery flavor, MightyQueen. Unfortunately, bad avocados have an icky bitter flavor. I find buying avocados to be such a crap shoot - I might buy 3 and get 3 bad ones or 3 good ones, or some combination.

Since they're not cheap, this is pretty annoying!

No shortage here, but all 3 of the $2 ones I bought at the FANCY market for Thanksgiving were bad inside.

Were they ripe when you bought them? If I want to use them right away, I pick out ones that just yield and use them that evening or the next day. Otherwise I pick out completely unripe ones and wait until they ripen. Sliced with a squeeze if lime juice and salt, sometimes with quick pickled red onion. Guacamole is probably one of the easiest moles to make and there are so many versions.

I bought them a underripe the Monday before Thanksgiving.
