This is probably something that hasn't been asked before: How come strawberry won out as a fruit-based ice cream flavor? Other than the ubiquitous chocolate and vanilla, every ice cream brand---from Godiva to Great Value (Walmart)---comes in strawberry. Well, Ben & Jerry has Cherry Garcia, and Haagen-Dazs has mango. But those largely brand-specific. Strawberry is still far more popular. Ditto for milkshakes: you almost always have strawberry and rarely other fruit flavors.

What made strawberry win out over other fruit flavors in ice cream? Why not blueberry, or raspberry, or cherry? I know strawberries cost less than most other fruits, and the habit continued even after most flavors became artificial. Or maybe the strawberry flavor is more compatible with dairy than other fruit flavors. But other than that, I can't pin down a reason.

For yogurt, which is also a dairy product, the flavors are more diverse. Cherry, blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry, as well as other fruit flavors, are all more-or-less equally popular. But for ice cream, strawberry stands far above the rest.

Because it’s yummy. It was my favorite flavor as a kid. Strawberry or vanilla. Chocolate ice cream always tasted bitter to me as a kid. If we had Neapolitan ice cream, I avoided the chocolate. Now my favorite is jamocha almond fudge

In addition to the way the fruit retains its flavor when frozen and the way the texture of the fruit allows it to be added to a frozen product without turning into chunks of solid ice, it probably also has something to do with the availability, price, and ease of acquisition of enough of the fruit to make turning it into ice cream economically feasible.

People in the US who grew their own food probably had plenty of strawberries because they are adaptable to our climate and growing seasons, and when people grew a lot of their own food they probably had a strawberry patch next to their vegetable garden, so when people made ice cream at home, it was probably natural to flavor at least some of it with strawberries.

When ice cream was becoming commercially available and affordable to most people (rather than just something rich people could afford), it is likely that whoever was among the first to make it in commercial quantities had access to a lot of strawberries, so people just got used to strawberry ice cream because it was what was available.

Because strawberries and cream are an outstanding flavor combination.

Some fruits don't go great with cream ( apples, watermelon). Some don't freeze well. Some go great with cream only when fresh but not after being preserved ( peaches)

Up until recently, blueberries were expensive, and they stain.

For the less expensive ice creams, artificial strawberry flavor still tastes like strawberry and still tastes good with cream.... er, milk, in the cheap ice creams.

On the flavored yogurts, does anyone have the figures for what flavors sell the best? I'm going to guess that the strawberry is a big seller.

I haven't noticed any dominance among yogurt flavors. Strawberry-banana seems to be the most common, but most others aren't far behind, if not neck-and-neck. My favorite is blueberry by Yoplait: it has real blueberry pieces and a distinct flavor.

My $0.02 strawberry is very agreeable, in natural and artificial flavors. Cherry (black cherry, especially) tastes TERRIBLE as an artificial flavor, with a musty, funky essence that isn't at all present in the real thing.

Also, blueberry doesn't have much of a taste, save for when they're tart. It would be a pretty disappointing ice cream flavor. The artificial flavor would be stronger, I imagine, but probably nothing like actual blueberries.

Strawberry goes nicely into dairy products and produces a smooth flavor. Hence also why we have Strawberry Quik!

I think another reason might be color. Strawberries turn ice cream pink, a color which is pleasing to the eye.

It's probably partially for ease of processing... cherries require pit removal, raspberry seeds are more gritty and annoying than strawberry seeds. Blueberry is quite tart unless cooked, whereupon it mellows to the flavor more associated with blueberries, so you'd have a cooking step you wouldn't have to do with strawberries.
