I am curious about the green bags too! I was going to buy some, but didn't know if they sold them somewhere besides bed, bath and beyond? I did look at one walmart and didn't find them. will check somewhere else. As far as the foodsaver vacuum sealer, we have one and use it all the time for meat. I always buy a whole tenderloin and cut it up for steaks. it works really well. we purchased ours at Kohl's..always watch the sales and use the extra discount coupons. same for the bag/rolls of plastic when we run out.

I have a foodsaver vacuum sealer but I am starting to wonder if ziplocks
do just as well and are cheaper. If I freeze soup I can get most of the air out
of a ziplock also. I like to keep cut up produce /shredded cheese ect in the mason jars that have been vacuumed with the jar lid attachment
We bought the zip lock name vaccum sealer. it works very nice and you can buy the vaccum and the bags at walmart. the vaccum was about 8.00 dollars and the bags are like 3.00 for 10 bags. we found it was far cheaper then a vaccum sealer that you have to buy special wrap for. we use it for everything. it's way better then plain ziploc bags.

I saw these at our Super WalMart today. They were up front near the magazines on and end cap with all the other As Seen on TV crap. etc.

No. Ziplocks do not absorb ethylene gas, the green bags do. (sort of)
They are not made for freezing, they're not made to replace ziplocks, and they aren't the same as vacuum bags.
The bags are impregnated with a substance (probably potassium permanganate) that absorbs a gas the fruits and vegetables produce that acts as a ripening agent. If this gas is kept away, many fruits and veggies slow down their rate of decomposition.
I tried them, and the do work, especially when they are new, and if you keep the food inside dry. But it is difficult to keep a lot of the foods dry, especially if they are misted at the grocery store, or if water condenses inside them. Some foods emit more ethylene that others - strawberries produce a lot, so the bags work particularly well on those.
When mine run out I will not purchase them again. There are other ethylene absorption products on the market that you just put in the produce crisper drawer. That makes more sense to me due to the water issue; it's always pretty dry in there.
Mon son did a science fair experiment using the green bags, zip lock, and a control (no bag). The green bag did better than no bag, but the Ziplock beat the green bag by a long shot
