Gosh yes, it's the water. We moved from So. NJ where we had well water, came out of the tap 54 degrees (sigh) to E. N.C., yuk! We had to put filters on everything including the shower, the water was turning my hair a lovely shade of green. Even the dog gets bottled water, after she picked up the virus Giardia from the tap water and had to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks.
It is definitely the water. It HAS to be. I am a big coffee drinker too and had done the reverse move... from NY to TX. I happened to pack coffee, since I had some unopened when I was leaving; therefore, the coffee I initially used was the same, as was the pot.
It is all what you get used to. I had really good water where I lived in NY and hated coffee from tap water from my area in TX. Go figure. LOL.
One more vote for the water. I filter all of my water at home. When I drink the coffee (sludge) at work, all I can taste is the burnt chemicals from the water. bleh.
When we lived in Texas (Rio Grande Valley), the water was so awful that we'd get mud - no lie! - from the coffee pot when we'd clean it out. It was calculated, by looking at community water usage rates along the river, that by the time the Rio Grande got to our city, every single molecule of water it contained had been sucked up into a municipal water supply, strained, chlorinated, drunk, eliminated and put back into the river at least four or five times. And it tasted it, too.
If your coffee doesn't taste right, bite the bullet and buy bottled water. We paid a pretty penny for bottled water during our 18 years down there, and it was worth every nickel. I'm so glad to be living in a place where I can turn on the water faucet, fill a glass and drink it down without either gagging or worrying about what I'm ingesting. And the coffee tastes good, too.
Yeah, I took my coffee grounds and plunger to my office and suddenly the same coffee has almost no flavor - not contaminated, just no flavor for some reason. The office water goes through a purifying machine that probably boils the crap out of the water, thereby killing the bacteria, but also removing the water's natural flavor ... or maybe it's just the chemicals they use in the office machine.
Try Sparkletts Crystal-Fresh (purified) water. I am not a coffee drinker, but I noticed that my hot tea made with this water taste the best!
