I grew up eating this soup also. It was my Dads favorite.

I like to make mine from scratch. I recently bought a 5 pound container of mixed dry beans from costco. Really good blend for soup. I have tried turkey bacon for the wife, but she agrees it has to be nice thick slice ham bacon.

My husband loves this stuff. I had never even -heard- of it til I met him 20 years ago. The canned favorites in our house were Progresso Minestrone, and Campbell's Cream of Mushroom. We didn't even put bacon in our baked beans - those came from the Heinz Vegetarian Baked Beans can.

As far as I'm concerned, bacon in anything other than eggs is a waste. It should be served, in volume, on a plate.

It's bacon "flavoring," and it's delicious! Thank God, and thank Campbell's it's still on the market.

It's like Campbell's Pork and Beans... they have a special machine that pitches a tiny bit of pork into every can, just so they can keep the label the same.

It's kind of like looking for the prize in the Cracker Jacks box these days... hard to find, but it's there.

OK -- this is one of those guilty little prepared treasures that I love once in a while! I know, I know . . . it's full of salt, etc. but nothing else quite tastes like it. I'm getting restocked since I moved and will put this in the "emergency" section. That's for bad days when food is a good tranquilizer or there is snow on the ground in the south.

Luckily for me, I have slightly LOW blood pressure. So I can have all the sodium I want!
