Because we can't have a caviar thread without also having a thread about snails.
Ever try them? Love them or do you gag at the idea of eating a big slimy garden pest?
I personally love them. Its my dad's fault, really. I was probably about 9 when he bought half a dozen or so that were already prepped with garlic/parsley/butter from the grocery. He heated them up and horrified myself and my younger siblings by eating one. Then he dared us to try. I was the only one who had the balls to do it. And it was delicious. I ate my brother's and sister's snails and then dad let me finish the last couple off. I've only had them one other time since then and they're still delicious.
I've had them a few times, but admittedly only with lots of garlic butter. Garlic butter makes ANYTHING good.
I was looking up "porridge" recently, because although I had read about it hundreds of times in books, I didn't know what it really was besides some kind of breakfast mush, and I found out that Heston Blumenthal's signature dish is snail porridge.
My favorite way is to put a few into a huge mushroom
pour garlic oil over the top and place pepper jack
cheese over that and put in a 350° oven for 10min
I've only eaten escargot once a few years back and really loved the sauce they put it in. The snails themselves were fine as well...until I ate a long, thin crunchy part. I thought to myself, "What in the world is long, thin, and crunchy on a snail?", and then I realized that their eyes are around the same size.
OH BOY.
That creeped me out to the point of never going around it again. Tasty though.

I agree with you. It's the garlic butter, so of course they're not bad. So I would eat them again, anytime they were offered, but I doubt I'd ever order them myself.
Love them! I have a big can of them in the pantry, am going to make them this weekend.
