I've gone to Whole Foods a handfull of times. Each time, I leave wondering "what the heck was I thinking?" The prices are outrageous. I've discovered that this whole "organic" things is a load of BS, and that "free-range" chicken isn't 1/2 as good as the stuff they pump full of hormones. The produce is very limited and not nearly as good quality as what you can get at Publix. I don't care much for the ethnic or wierd granola sections of Whole Foods, and when I went there (why - because a former girl-friend liked to go there), I left with a sack full of stuff I didn't really want to eat that cost me $20.

I DON'T GET IT!!! I really don't like the selection of food or the quality at Whole Foods.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Whole Foods Market. But... I don't buy chicken, regardless of what store it's at. I've been a vegetarian for going on 12 years. Regular grocery stores don't care very much in the way of vegetarian or natural food products. Whole Foods is a vegetarian's paradise! There are SO many things I can buy there. Tons of great vegetarian and vegan food. Things you would never find at a Publix, Winn Dixie or other chain store. Two thumbs WAY up for this family of vegetarians.

If you aren't a vegetarian or into natural living (like going organic, living green, etc.) then there's no reason for you to shop at a store like that. You will be paying higher prices for no reason.

And the organic thing is good. The way products are so over processed today and even the animals you are eating are so injected with hormones and steroids that it's got the industry in bad shape. Your body will do better on organic products for the most part. Do some research on it..

Your chances of getting hit by a truck remain the same...

The point is, everyone will die of something. If I can eat a little plump chicken before I die, I'll relish the enjoyment, rather than eat grass.

Whole Foods & Wild Oats is all about marketing & they are making a good buck doing it!!!

Whole Foods & Wild Oats goes for the person who wants specific foods & packaging & is willing to pay the $$ for it. I am not a vegetarian but have friends who are & they will pay the $$ & do what it takes to stay true to their beliefs. Some people want what they see there & Whole Foods knows that...it is why the store is the way it is.

I've noticed the stores are also in areas where they are going to get the clientiele they are looking for.

We cannot afford Whole Foods but I think it is a good concept.

Off to Wally World I go to pick through mass grown everything

If you want to eat healthy or if you are a vegan or want to eat organic it is nice to go to a store that has it all under one roof.

I like it.

You know the interesting thing. I have been a vegetarian for pretty much my whole life. I never drank or smoked, took drugs, nothing. I have also never stood in front of a Burger King with a sign or go around the supermarket telling people not to buy that junk food or even tell anyone my views or how to live their life and it is my business how I live my life.

However, when someone finds out you are a vegetarian instead of saying nothing like, "That's interesting" their first response is most often defensive, or even hostile. Why do you suppose that is? Your comment "Eat grass" while exhibiting, I am assuming no knowledge on the subject at all, is a thinly disguised attempt to insult vegetarians for what ever reason you have. I never really have understood that.

A lot of it is marketing.
The "natural" looking floors, the tasteful lighting.
And with the abundance of cashiers, the lines are usually quick, the shopping experience is pleasant.
There is another chain of natural/organic groceries called Sunflower Markets. They take a different strategy: their stores are more warehouselike, (like WalMart) and the savings is passed on to the consumer.
I am all for more natural foods, especially organic, and I have noticed that organic is getting cheaper and more plentiful. It's not just for hippies anymore.

LOL - I'm lucky I even have a PUBLIX within driving distance, let alone a "Whole Foods." I know lots of people like this store, and it sounds good, but I have also read negative reviews of some of their stores as well - poor quality, limp produce, unhappy employees, etc. I guess they vary by location.

Our second home in Asheville, NC does not have one, but it has Earth Fare, Greenlife and Fresh Market, all of which are considered better than whole foods by the locals there. I do like the health and organic groceries, and am at least appreciative of the large selection of organics that Publix offers. The organics at Publix don't even cost much more than the regular items, IMO.

Now, I have heards lots of buzz about "Trader Joe's" but there doesn't seem to be one in Florida (or even Asheville). Anyone have experience with this store?

No, though I have indeed tasted (and enjoyed!) its products.
From what I hear, their food products are creative and flavorful, and their employees are happy and helpful.

I think the closest Trader Joe's in this neck of the USA woods is up in Atlanta.

Gypsy, their site says that 2 stores will be opening in Charlotte.
Much has been written about Trader Joe's in the Colorado forum--the transplanted Californians are sorely lamenting the lack of TJ's.
