I bought a 2000 Ford Expedition EddieBauer Allwheel drive/4wd. It has 148,000 miles on a 5.4 engine.

Every option available and all work. All leather interior etc. Interior has little wear and carpets look brand new. A few minor scratches on outside that can be buffed out and 3 small dings.

Buying new General Grabber (hts) all season tire for it and needs new windshield. Paid 5900.00.

Does this sound like a good deal and is there anything I should know about this vehicle? Other than poor mpg.

I've got a buddy who has an Expedition. I think it's a 98 or 99. Considering it's size, it's not horrible for mileage (15-16 in town?).

The only thing he has griped about is radiator trouble. He has had several "come apart at the seams." He thinks his radiator cap might be holding too much pressure in the system, but I have to wonder if he hasn't gotten ahold of a couple "cheap crap" replacement radiators.

Other than that, they just drive the heck out of it. And buy a lot of gas for it!

It sounds like a sound vehicle.
With that said I truly believe you paid over the amount it's worth.
I've seen similar go for around 4000.00.

The reasoning is because of poor MPG and the cost of fuel having a substantial downward push on the pricing of large bodied SUV inventories.

An unscientific observation my wife and I had the other day was the large volume of used SUV's for sale at car lots.

If your willing to spend large sums of money on fuel costs then you can get quite the deal on some nice vehicles.

Agreed--if you can handle the cost and frequency of filling your tank, you could conceivably make a heck of a deal on an Expedition, Sequoia or other large SUV.

A friend of mine had a '99 Expedition, but he hit a wild hog with it and rolled it over (yes, that actually happened). He then bought a 2000 Expedition so he could use his old one for parts. The only problems I know of that he's had was a bad fuel pump, a leaky heater core, and a bad coil pack.

Honestly, with over 150k on a Ford, I'd be mostly worried about the transmission.

5.4 motors are known to ingest spark plugs. The argument could be made that the back plugs are a nightmare to change so no one changes them, causing the headache.

$5900, needs a windshield and tires (is a $1000 proposition) so you are into it for $6900 for a 12 yr old/150K mile truck

^^^

You mean those older Tritons regurgitate spark plugs. It's the later 3v engines that don't like to give them back in one piece.

But, keep them torqued to 28 ft/lbs and you're pretty much golden. NOT the 13 ft/lbs figure that I had seen given out.

That's probably a $3500 rig down here in HTX, so you overpaid unless it's pristine and some trim like a King Ranch.

An alright ride, though. Not big on the 03-later models for some reason. As long as you don't have that awful airbag suspension, you're even better off. I won't whine about MPGs to you, mainly because if you have a need for it, the vehicle and its all-around capability will pay for itself. If you needed something as overall useless as a Smart car, Prius or Yaris, you'd have bought one and called someone else to do heavy moving for you.

Any particular item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for said item. Whether or not it was a good deal, time will tell.

I am disabled and it is easier for me to get in Expedition than our Ram 1500 4x4. Also I don't drive more than 5000 miles a year so won't spend to much on gas.

I am having my mechanic go over it Wednesday. Every thing works and tranny is solid and smooth shifting.
