Hmm might have to wander into the dealership when the new trucks hit the lots and see what they'll offer on my 2010 Platinum. This time though...it's time to look at a Lariat, I'm not a fan of the retractable side steps more annoying than useful.
Why buy a Mercedes anymore when you can get trucks like these?
They all pretty much look the same these days with Dodge massive grilles and GM beds. Ever try to work out of one of these bloated pigs? My 04 F150 Screw is so freaking tall you can't reach anything in the bed from the sides. At 6'4" even I have to step up into it. The ol' lady pretty much has to climb to get in. Comfy- yes they are, but ridiculously bloated. If the CAFE really meant anything at all they'd make these pigs smaller and usable. With the F150, the folks in the real world are getting better fuel mileage from the 6.2 than the EcoBoost junker. Considering it's a fairly low tech engine by comparison, there's a lot smaller chance of failure too. I can only hope they've addressed the lousy tranny life in the 2013.
Plastic fantastic poorly fitting panels (actually, that a desirable thing on cheaply made hardplastic interiors so they don't rattle away your sanity) are sure a sign of luxury.
But wait, it gets better! You can get it with some plasti-mation wood-look-a-like!
But hey, I guess it works to fool a few buyers into thinking they're getting a luxury vehicle. And it's still functional, they didn't get rid of the buttons (imagine trying to work FordTouch with work gloves on, something probably 99.95% of buyers of the upper trim levels have never worn)
Good trucks, but the RAM 2500 HD we have in the family is fine for truck duty. That's the beauty of a truck used as real truck, going on 17 years old with in excessive of 200,000 miles and no reason to replace it yet. Parts are cheap and they're easy to work on. Just last weekend we hauled three tons of flagstone (plus sand and gravel) for a patio we'll be building next weekend. Who needs a Mercedes indeed.
As a Ford Fan the updates are nice. It is funny, those who ***** about all the pastic... I have an 05 with 100,000 plus miles, is on the road every day and carrying loads and working, it doens't rattle or squeak. Before that I had a 98 F150 that didn't rattle or squeak, till the day it died. Both interiors were mostly plastic.
Unless you are a contractor, pull a heavy trailer such as a camper a 3/4 ton is fine. Most everyone else who has a pickup to pull douple duty a F150 or 1500 does really well. It can haul the family and be handy for trips to lowes or wherever.
I can do without the woodtrim. Unless it is the for real wood trim it isn't worth the time. The faux wood didn't look good in the 70s and 40 years later it is the same story. The more things change the more they stay the same.

That was the funny thing on one of the F150 forums about the tall beds. People wanted more bed space to carry stuff, but they beech about it when it is up close and personal. Oh well. At my last job, I saw the owner's 2010 F150 sitting next to another department heads 2002(?) F250 4x4. They were the same lousy height!
The 09-later F150 body style isn't growing on me and I think my uncle's opinion of the '08s made me realize how cheap they are.
Not to worry, though, since my friend wanted me to look at a newer Tundra. That is a PIG! I won't even look at those, especially if they somehow still use timing belts on the v8s like I know the early 4.7L did...if they don't, so be it. I just can't stomach that much 1/2-ton truck.
I think I'll just save up for a Heritage-era King Ranch. May just bite the bullet and let a dealer finance me. Who knows.
As for the fake woodtrim, maintain actual woodtrim and you'll see that is a decent idea in hindsight. I see enough trucks with torn up leather seats that I know that's not happening...test drove a King Ranch recently with torn up seats. That Castano leather is TOUGH stuff and needs a conditioner for it. See my point? I'm okay with plastic, though. My XL F150 has no fancy power options and that comes in handy driving it through plants and the doors and floors get dirtied up.
