I think they were neat for what they were but they did make the nose really butt ugly. But for them to be efficient in the new Mustang the car itself also needs to shed some weight.
Not going to happen for the same reason the SVO didn't last: not enough market separation from the V8 model. And the symbolism of a V8 in an American pony car is so deeply ingrained that only the most desperate circumstances will force its replacement. And if we get that desperate, we'll probably see the discontinuation of the Mustang altogether.

That "butt-ugly nose" became the styling basis for the Mustang GT from 1987 on until the '94 redesign. It was a damn sight better than the two-headlight and cross-grille design that had been in use since the 70s.

Yeah I knew this, but I have to disagree. I'll take the 4 eyes look over the "smacked in the face" bug eyed look any day. I also liked the squared off dash with round gauges the 1979-1986 models used much better than the later models.
The only thing I liked better on post 1986 cars was they came with the beefier 8.8 rear end.
Yeah, I kind of liked it too, hard to find a good one anymore. Amen to Deez Nutts that the new Mustang (and most current production cars!) need to go on a serious diet! In Colin Chapman's immortal words, "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere." Incidentally makes the car less thirsty even when driven in a "sporting" manner...
