I read a story today that for 2011, Ford is producing their own Powerstroke 6.7L diesel engine. I knew that Navistar and Ford were having problems but didn't know Ford pulled their contract with Navistar completely. I can't blame them after all the problems with the 6.0L, I'm curious as to how this new engine is going to turn out.

Opinions?

I've always been a fan of diesels, but could never justify buying one due to the $6K-$8K extra that one would have to pay. I looked at a few shots of the 2011 Super Duty and I'm quite impressed, the interior quality seems to be really stepped up from the past years. What do you all think?

It'll be hot stuff for a little while until Duramax and Cummins update to outdue it, like always. Ford has always lagged behind with diesels the last few years. Even if Ford is making the engine, I don't think it'll change.

Got any numbers for the new Power Stroke? And yes, Ford pulled their contract with Navistar for a few reasons. I guess Navistar made unauthorized changes to the 7.3L w/o Ford consent thats what set the whole ordeal off. I know they had alot of problems with that engine, too, resulting in ridiculous amounts of warranty claims. What Ford should have done is used Navistar's inline 6 DT466, thats a great diesel engine. Incredibly reliable, easy to repair (in-chassis overhauls), etc. Not sure why they wanted a V8 diesel when they had a V10 available. Anyways, Im curious to see what Ford can do with the new engine.

Outdue it?

Current numbers on the big 3 diesels:

Ford Powestroke 6.4L: 350 HP @ 3000 RPM and a peak torque output of 650 ft-lbs at 2000 RPM
Dodge Cummins 6.7L: 305 HP @ 3000 RPM and a peak torque output of 610 ft-lbs at 1500 RPM
Chevy Duramax 6.6L 360 HP @ 3200 RPM and a peak torque output of 650 ft-lbs at 1600 RPM

Doesn't seem to me like any of the trucks are whomping the other, the Dodge obviously would be in last, but the Duramax and Powerstroke are pretty much tied except for the extra 10 HP the Duramax has going for it.

I didn't see any official numbers for the new 6.7L Powerstroke but I've heard talk that Ford wants to aim for 400 HP and 700 ft-lbs of torque which would make a great truck. Not sure about the aluminum heads that Ford is going to put in the new Powerstroke, I have my concerns about using aluminum but I could be wrong.

What is the weight difference between the DT466 and the 444 (7.3 IDI and Powerstroke)? The DT 466 has wet sleeves, so an engine can be rebuilt in truck. The 444 doesn't have wet sleeves.

Ford years ago in their medium and heavy duty trucks made the 7.8 diesel. So ford isn't exactly new to the diesel game. Although nothing the F250 up markets.

With emissions requirements changing the whole diesel game is changing. Emissions was one of the reason they ceased using the 7.3 and went to the 6.0. I would rather drive a 7.3 any day. It doesn't matter the age. I like the 7.3 or I would re-engine a Ford with the 5.9 Cummins...

I actually thought they had all the issues with the 6.0 worked out. I spent a trip in one heading to the dunes. we were pulling a relativaly light load but I thought it ran pretty good. Seems like it spun a lot of rpms though.

I'd rather have an old 5.9 Cummins over all the new ones (the lack of noise in the new ones is nice though) and with the mods if done to mine I'm right with the Ford and Dmax without all the emmisions BS. I wouldn't mind an old 7.3 either , expecially in an Excursion !

I couldnt tell you to be honest. I was reading the other day about Navistar's newer Maxxforce diesel engines. Apparently theyre using compacted graphite iron blocks which is reportedly a lot stronger and lighter than gray iron, which most manufacturers use.

The dt466 should weigh around 1,400 lbs and is overkill for a pickup. The dt360 would be a more realistic fit and then they would have a stout engine.

I would think that the DT466 would cost too much for the pickup truck market.

We used to buy International school buses and after the unholy mess with the 6.0 in our '05 buses, we started specing the 466 motor. I believe they were around $8K more than the 6.0.

wet sleeve=true diesel
dry sleeve= throwaway (non-rebuildable)

We had pretty good luck with the 7.3....still have about 500 of them on the road. In a 33,000 lb, rear engine school bus, they last about 100-125K miles. Then we throw a Jasper in there and go a few more miles.

I'm surprised Ford, with their crushing debt load, is messing with designing their own diesels. The 2010 emissions standard is TOUGH (and expensive) to meet. Caterpillar just threw in the towel (on-road diesel market).
