Hi all,
I am moving to Fort Collins in June from upstate NY, excited about the move but was hoping to get some pointers about the rental market. Online I see many places with leases for August 1, and I spoke to a couple rental agencies that made it sound like August leases go fast. Do you think it is wise to try to sublet for June in Fort Collins to find a place in person or is it better to book things earlier in spring? I'm going to visit the first week of May but they got me worried this is too late.

I had a feeling the agency I was talking to focused on undergrad housing and they were trying to create a sense of urgency, but any info would be appreciated. Also, does anyone have suggestions of good rental agencies and ones to avoid? Thanks! For reference, I am a professional working at CSU looking for dog friendly housing.

Can you jet out for a weekend?

SWA and Frontier have been running deals under $80 each way. JetBlue is worth looking onto for a bargain fare.

Yes, get a short-term rental if you can't find a place that meets your fancy.

As a career person, I would steer clear of any student housing, you will have had enough of them at the end of your workday.

You don't mention your interests, but consider there is good hiking and biking in FC, and having a place 'walkable' to a dog park / trail will be a real plus for you. Fortunately there are places to the west, SW and NW of CSU that are not student centric, yet close to trails. If you don't mind a short drive to work, look into LaPorte. It is not a trendy student area. For long-term / purchase... Look in area of Rist Canyon, but get a place on high ground (prone to flash floods). FC is really amiable to bike commute.

I'm planning to come out for a week in the beginning in May, I just had a few conversations with agents that made it sound like most rentals get booked now. Does that sound correct? Preferably I would like to line up places to visit in May.

I like outdoors stuff and biking, planning to bike to work as well. I will check out LaPorte as well. If it is useful I am looking to live alone and max rent is about 1300. Thanks for the help!

While you are looking keep in mind that the MAX runs up and down most of College - and I believe CSU students and faculty ride free. It goes right through the center of campus. Not that driving is a big deal in town, but if I worked that direction you can sure bet I'd be riding. There are also great bike paths all around.

Good luck with your search

Wow, moving from beautiful and lush upstate NY to here? I hope you like it Yeah, housing is a bit of an issue in this town, though not impossible.

That's good though that you have a job lined up. I hope it goes well for you.

While not necessarily disagreeing with the above post, it is a bit reckless and irresponsible to guarantee and promise to others moving to Fort Collins that they will "absolutely LOVE it" here, and that it is "the best place to be". I saw a lot of that stuff on this very forum before my family moved here, only to find it nothing like we were expecting (translation: disappointment). One person's paradise can be another's huge mistake.

Please folks, by all means show your enthusiasm, but don't assume you know what's right for other people. Where people live and/or relocate to is highly personal and subjective. We don't all think the same and have clone-like / exact same preferences!

P.S. "Choice City" is frankly a bit laughable

Securing a rental in August and September is brutal. Competition is fierce. You can get edged out by 5 minutes of approval or by just being on time for a showing. Craigslist is best for private condo rentals and subleases. Subleases are great for buying time. Rents also go up in August and September because of the high demand and not enough rentals. Cheaper rents in Loveland, Greeley, and Windsor.

Thanks for the help everyone, I was able to find a place through a co-worker! You are right that the rental market is very competitive. Good places did not stay listed for more than a day

Seriously? I spent 17 years there and I found it about 80% awful, and 20% marginally acceptable. Its brown 8 months of the year, tract homes as far as the eye can see, the weather is too hot most summers and the traffic (South anyway) is worse by the day. 20 minutes to get from West side of city to I25. Then there is CSU. Best "Choice" I made was to leave.
