Hi-
My husband and I just moved to Boca from Chicago a couple of weeks ago and are desperately searching for specialty (not boutiquey) grocery stores in the area. We are accustomed to going to more of the ethnic type stores (Polish or Mexican are the mainstays in Chicago) where there's a wide variety of fruits, veggies (ex. fresh garbanzo beans or olives when in season), meats, imported items, fun bakery items, etc. at FANTASTIC prices. We've been to Publix (HATE it - terrible variety/crazy high prices/etc.) and of course we know about Whole Foods (love but too pricey for weekly shopping).

Are there any other options around here? I figured with the great climate for fruits/veggies and ethnic diversity in S FL there would be a lot more options than what we're finding. Yes, granted I realize Boca is what it is, but there's got to be something around here. We're willing to travel a bit.

I'm looking for a Publix-sized store but family owned. Does that exist here?

Thanks!!!

Big Market at corner of SW Davie Boulevard and Riverland road. in Fort Lauderdale. Lots stuff. It always freaks me out when I see the goat heads in the case.

Thanks!!! We will definitely check them out.
I admittedly like the places that kind of freak me out with some of the crazy things there - it takes the monotony out of grocery shopping.

Walmart or their Neighborhood Food Markets have excellent prices on boxed/canned/frozen food/ornge juice. Their meat tastes funny and their vegtables and fruits can look fine and turn bad on you a day later.
