Can anyone recommend any specific nice apartment complexes in the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood areas for a young professional in his 20s please? Previously was considering Falls at Marina Bay till we read the bad reviews.

It depends on your budget. How much rent can you afford to spend? What size apartment are you looking for? How many BR's? Are you looking strictly at apartment complexes with central leasing offices? Or are you considering private condos?

The hottest area for young professionals is Las Olas, but it is also the most expensive area. There are a few apartment rental complexes around Fort Lauderdale. Port Royale is decent and less expensive than Las Olas. I would recommend Port Royale over Falls at Marina Bay simply due to the fact that Port Royale is located in a better neighborhood.

If you're open to exploring the private rental market, your options will multiply exponentially. However, you would need to find a good realtor to help you because there are thousands of MLS listings. To simplify your search, I would first decide which specific area you want to live in.

Get a realtor, and rent a condo that is owned by an individual. The selection of condos in the Fort Lauderdale area surpasses what you will find at a complex. For a young professional, stay east of US1, with SE 17th Street being youir southern border and Commercial Blvd being your northern border. This area offers great real estate from which to choose, great shopping and amenities, and easy access to nightlife in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Las Olas, and Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Looking to spend ~$1500 (would be willing to go up to $2000)

Looking for a 1 BR

Not really picky regarding central leasing office vs private condo (I guess I'd lean slightly towards a central leasing office)

If you're willing to go up to $2000, I would look at newer complexes downtown like Alexan, Flagler Village, Strada 315. They are in a "downtown" neighborhood, but all have private parking and you are a few dollars/minutes away from a cab to the nightlife or the beach. These buildings are filled with young professionals and often host complex-oriented events (like Alexan just had a Superbowl party for resident) so you get to meet people. Plus the amenities (new pools, game rooms, etc) make it a nice option for those looking to socialize. I would vote no on Port Royale and Marina Bay if you are looking to be in the neighborhood of beaches/bars. Both of those complexes require you to hop on the highway.

Best of luck!
Jenn

Isn't strada in a rough neighborhood though? I thought the general advice is stay east of route 1?

I would look in Flagler Heights which is the area just north of Broward Blvd behind the city hall. They have a VERY large apartment complex and a lot of young people live there. You would also be able to walk downtown from that area, or to the supermarket even. I would also look at Colee Hammock which is south of broward blvd and north of las olas and east of US1. A lot of young people, your in the thick of the action and you could even bike to the beach. You should be able to find something in that area for your price range.

The east of US1 rule is bent a little bit here. Strada is very nice. Yes, it borders a rougher neighborhood, but so does everywhere in downtown. Alexan Solmar, Flagler Village, and others border rougher neighborhoods.
