I am going visit Miami later this summer. And I was wondering about the S. Ocean Drive area in Hollywood. I hear that Hollywood is a really cool area. The condo I am looking to rent is on S. Ocean Drive. BUT I don't know anything about the area. I like the condo because it seems close to the beach, close to Walmart, & reasonably priced / clean. But I want to stay somewhere safe. Is this area a good place for a tourist (with a budget ...) to stay? Locals, please advise. Thanks!

Anywhere on the beach is pretty safe. Its on the mainland where things get sketchy.

Okay, this makes me feel a lot better. Thanks! It's acrossed the street from the beach, if that adds/changes anything :P

I lived on HWB for several years, being "across the street" doesn't change anything, if you are East of the Intracoastal, you are still on the beach. It is a safe place, but there still is crime. The beach draws a diverse group and I feel that you end up with more petty crime because of it. Don't leave valuables in your car, smash & grabs are common. Lock your bike up, do reasonable safety precautions just like you'd do anywhere else and you'll be fine.
