You can get a very nice 3 bedroom home, in a good neighborhood, for well under $300k. It just might be a townhouse or condo. Nothing wrong with that. It means there ARE options, to be sure. And if you can't get what you want for the price you can afford, you move somewhere else. I mean, isn't that how ALL areas work?

OP specifically wants a house. Not condo or townhouse.
Even then. 30k is far from doable.

The op is convinced there are single family homes down here for $30K.

Lol. Oh, yeah. I guess technically correct. There are single family homes well under $100k, but you would have to be a drug dealer or stupid to live anywhere near them. But the reality is that people do live in these areas, so who knows, maybe that's where OP is at in life and to be honest, I guess that's ok.

Places in southeast Florida that are available for cheap rent are places where you probably wouldn't want to live---not if you value your life and your belongings. Professional-type positions are out there but like any place else they are very competitive, though here many of them don't pay all that well. Most so-called middle class professional people here are just barely getting by these days, and some are only able to afford living here because they live with roommates or in multiple income family households. The cost of living in this area is ridiculously high compared to the average person's income. The jobs that are mostly available are those in the service industry, and the pay is not good. Many places here also will not hire you if you don't speak Spanish.

You know, the $55k house. It's in a neighborhood with halfway decent cars and homes, boats in driveways, etc. It's not somewhere I'd want to live, but it may be more than fine for others. It's a very poor area but I've literally lived in worse.

$30k? Maybe a rural shack in central FL 300 miles from here? Any house going for $30k in South FL is probably on the verge of being condemned. And is in a terrible neighborhood. Pompano Beach just happens to have the highest crime rate in Broward County, and is 75% above the national average for crime. But good luck with moving there!

To the OP, don't let some of these posters scare you.. I am actually relocating down to South Florida myself so it is not uncommon, I also know many northeasterners who have made the same move or are pondering on making the move.. There is a reason why it is one of the fastest growing states in the country, Florida is a VERY desirable state.. With that said, I always recommend securing a job before you move anywhere, I secured a job in Fort Lauderdale and now I can make the move because of that, I would recommend that you do the same.. As far as what kind of jobs are in demand, I work in the hotel industry which is a high-demand industry, other high-demand fields in the Fort Lauderdale area including anything medical related, education, boat manufacturing and maintenance, and several large companies have a big presence in the area including American Express, DHL, AutoNation, Motorola, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
