We would like to come down to Fort Myers Beach for a two week vacation.

Would May be a good time to avoid the crowds, or should we wait until August or September?

Of course, then we are getting into hurricane season. We used to live in Fort Myers, and I recall very well when hurricane Donna hit in 1960. We lived near the high school, and the eye was over our house for almost two hours.

Snowbird season officially ends Easter week. So you would be fine in May, and the Gulf water temp is in the mid-70's by then.

It much depends on the temps around here if it get hot early they leave sooner, If it doesn't they stay longer. But this year you don't have to worry about crowds, there aren't any.

May is perfect.. Lee County Schools have their spring break April 23 to April 30. Most tourists will be gone and hotel rates go down and sales start in all the local stores. Enjoy !

Thanks for all of the answers.

I guess our family was one of the pioneer snowbirders. My dad was a farmer in Ohio and in 1950 we started coming to Fort Myers Beach after Halloween and stayed until Easter. We lived in a mobile home, called a trailer in those days, on San Carlos Island.

I went to the Beach School. When they served lunch and I saw okra, I threw up. They didn't have stuff like that in Ohio!

I have only been back a couple times since 1970 so we are looking forward to our visit.

You will be fine in May. Hotels are at their cheapest in the summer, though.

Hiker, you'll not recognize the place, I guarantee it. It's changed tremendously in the 5 years since I've been coming down and we moved here (almost 4 years ago). Lots of growth - some good, some not so good. But we love it and I hope you enjoy yourselves.

If you think that was a lot of growth, you should have seen the 20 years before you moved down. It was amazing.
