Unemployment down by almost 2% in Lee County

"It's an indication we're gradually coming out of the downturn," she said. "If we don't have any further jolts to our economy we should continue to come out of it."

Several companies are planning on hosting job fairs at Southwest Florida Works, another indication that Lee County is bouncing back, Hartman said.

If it goes down another 2% it will only be as bad as the rest of the US. Actually, with the money mag #2 best place to retire mention of Cape Coral (not saying I agree with that) I wouldn't be surprised if Lee posts about the best improvement in many areas in 2012 compared with the rest of Florida.

I feel like launching into the first few lines of The Jeffersons theme song!

I wouldn't really consider near 12% unemployment as good news.

Good Point
It is what Charles Payne refers to as celebrating mediocrity.

A 2% drop in dead summer when traditionally no one is hiring is indeed a point worth celebrating....

Maybe on the surface, but in my opinion it doesn't really hold up to any degree of scrutiny. While I'm not aware of how to find the specific data (If anyone knows how, I would appreciate a link or whatnot) I can't imagine job growth plays more of a part here than people leaving and those who've given up on looking for employment altogether.

I've not seen the government take any significant action towards addressing the underlying issues, nor I have I really noticed any significant increase in economic activity. I guess what I'm saying is that I think we should take a measured stance towards this, and focus on addressing the multitude of problems we're facing rather than paying undue attention to what's a relatively minor improvement.

There's also the matter of trouble in the EU, and given that western Europeans make up a large portion of the tourists we receive, the future isn't looking so great.

I agree that the problems in Europe can't be good for us in SW Florida.

There could be more economic activity generated by the increased number of home sales. Most people make purchases related to home improvement after the purchase of a new home.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. Probably not but I'll throw it up for anyone that is interested. The great thing about this link is it is always up to date. If you delve further it shows how unemployment is calculated, too, which seems to be the stuff of urban legend lately. I'm not referring to anything you wrote, surlamonde.

Love your username, by the way. "Of the world" for the non-francophiles.
