Just moved to the Cape and was looking forward to some bank fishing. With a city that has over 400 miles of canals I am shocked to find so little space set aside for folks to enjoy fishing. I have been told that even the bridges on Burnt Store Road will be placed off limits to fishing. There is supposed to be a meeting on this in City Hall Room 220A at 10 a.m on 1 February. Someone told me that fishermen were trashing the fishing areas at the bridges. I tend to believe that the local residents in those areas just do not like fishermen there. The city could easily put trash cans in those locations. Come on lets promote the Cape as friendly to dads that like to take there little ones out for a day of bonding.
I stopped by the Burnt Store Road boat dock and there again were NO FISHING signs there. Was told I could fish in the public park, forgot the name, off Burnt Store Road. So I went there to check it out and again there were NO FISHING signs all over the place. Very limited places there to fish.
What is wrong with this town? The powers to be hate fishermen? This is a beautiful town and I really like living here but sure do not like the cities view on sport fishing. Ron Allen

I am not sure where you have been trying to fish, but I see people fishing from the bridges on a daily basis. If you are near Burnt Store you can go to the bridge over Matlacha Pass, you can also go one of the 5 or so parks on the river like Horton, Jaycee, Four Mile Cove, there's also a park on both sides of the Parkway just before you go over the bridge, you can also go to Four Freedoms, The Yacht Club, Fort Myers Beach Pier, all the causeway islands on the way to Sanibel, you can also stop right before the causeway and fish. There are tons and tons of options.

I own a dock on a vacant lot. People use it to fish. How do i know? Because without fail they leave behind beer cans, trash, fishing line. The reason why the city is getting unfriendly is because some have once again ruined it for everyone. I hike often in the white mountains if i see trash i pick it up and take it out. If the people that were using these areas were good stewards it wouldnt have become an issue

I HATE seeing the messes people leave, it is one of the things in this world that really pisses me off! I spent a few hours at Four Mile last week and it's really sad to see what gets caught in the mangroves after the tide goes out. I wish there was a way to fine every person that litters! And don't get me started on the cigarette butts!!!

"What is wrong with this town? "
Good question, they don't call this place the Socialist Republic of Cape Coral, for nothing.
But you don't want to fish in the freshwater drainage ditches any way, the fish is not good for you..

There is no "they," it is you, so what you meant to say is "I don't call this place the Socialist Republic of Cape Coral for nothing."

There are alot of spots right off of Beach Pkwy in southwest Cape. There is a wide range of different types of fish running up and down this canal. I went this past weekend and caught a three nice sized mangrove snapper. There was some people there also catching mullet. Good Luck
