Hello forum
I will be moving to Fort Myers next year with my wife and 2 kids. My oldest will go start elementary school, and we were thinking of Gateway area to settle in.
We heard that Gateway Charter Elementary school is a good choice, but now I am getting mixed reviews from greatschools.org
Can anyone living in Fort Myers suggest any information about the school or any other elementary schools that you would suggest for my kids to attend?
We wouldnt mind settling in an area that is in a zone with a good school.
I will be working at Gulf Coast Hospital, so dont want it to be too far.

Thanks in advance

We have a second home in Gateway. Very happy with it. But our kids are in their mid and late twenties so schools were not that much of an issue for us. Others who live down here full time will be able to answer better than me, but I have a couple of observations.

First, there are two elementary schools in Gateway. Gateway Chater and Gateway Elementary. From what I recall, Gateway elementary was higher rated than Gateway Charter, but I do not know how reliable these ratings are.

But here is where things get crazy for someone moving in from a different part of the country. There are no zones or districts it seems in Lee county. Rather there is something called school choice which to me looks more like school assignment. Almost like forced bussing you had in many cities in the 60s and 70s (and maybe beyond). So you could move a few blocks from a good school but end up having your kid bussed an hour to some other, perhaps not so good school.

There are threads on this forum that discuss this issue.

If I were to move down here with school aged kids, I would take the time to figure out the system to be sure they end up in a good school.
