to "stalk" neighborhoods? We are staying in Sanibel for a couple of weeks and will be spending some time in Cape Coral trying to decide where to concentrate our home search once our house here sells. What are some things we should do? Check same area at different times of day/ week days vs weekends? What else to look at?? Thanks!

Drive around. The best areas of Cape Coral were built up first and may have old and run down homes. Some of those areas have had homes torn down and rebuilt. In the older parts of the SE the areas with the best water generally have the nicest homes. SW and NW have newer homes. Look at landscaping and trees. You may not want to be in a desolate looking area. Look for duplexes and apartments. You may not want to be a homeowner in an area of mostly tenants. If you are looking for waterfront check out the water map for fresh water, salt water, bridges, locks and how close you are to open water.

Find where you wanna live.

Realtor.com, Zillow, etc.

Then drive that area, morning, noon, night and weekends.

Get out of the car, knock on doors, say "Hi".

Anyone greets with a surly attitude, aggressive or if anything makes you uneasy. Scratch it off the list.

I would walk and bike the neighborhood for about 10 blocks in every direction. look for any disturbing signs such as multiple "for sale" or,especially "for rent" signs.,uncared for properties, cheap cars and trucks. If a street on a canal, check back yards for back yard storage of old trailers, boats and such.Cruise around on a weekend to check for loud parties, music, annoying dog barking.
You will, pretty much get a "feel" for a neighborhood as you explore.Very little crime in CC.

Good suggestions here. Showing up at different times of the day and different days of the week is great. If you sleep early show up at 8pm on a Tuesday night and see if there is much noise and/or a neighbor who works on cars/motorcycles or who has a lot of company late into the night.
Also talking to a knowledgeable real estate agent who has a lot of experience in the area you are interested in buying. The good ones really want to help you find the best possible home for you. This expertise can prove to be invaluable. Just ask anyone who has bought a home on their own and discovered something that made their lives miserable after already signing on the dotted line.

We have a realtor - my brother is a realtor so he found one for us that is associated with his office. We met with him the last time we were there (in Feb.) and liked him immediately. We get an email update of what is available that meets what we want. I "think" I have an area in mind, but then I look at a house in a different area that sparks my interest.....
So... how did you decide which house to buy? How did you decide what area NOT to look at? We are looking for gulf access/pool/3+bedrooms... SE? SW?
