What happens if there is a fire and you need the window to get out?

Most shutter companies will be more than happy to take on a service contract retainer fee to put them up if a storm arises - it's easy money for them, especially if there's no storm.
I don't get what you mean. You can't put them up yourself and close them if a storm is coming?

They are hinged so that you can open them if you have to, but If there's a fire, I plan on using the front door, patio doors or back door. Anyone who is foolish enough not to have smoke detectors throughout their home falls under the category that Darwin wrote about. I have 8 rooms and have a smoke detector in each one. The fire department supplied and installed them for free 10 years ago. I change the batteries myself, but they will even do that for me if I call them.

If you are a full time resident you can put them up yourself, but if you are an absentee homeowner (i.e "Snowbird"), the insurance company wants assurances that you have someone contracted to deploy your shutters in your absence.
