How does one determine this whilst home searching? Is there a local online map that shows this information?

What do you mean too far? Some people say steel cut oats take too long to cook. Not for me.

You don't want to be in a canal for 45 minutes or more to open water and 45 minutes back. It would get old real fast. The only problem with NH Kev's app is that it tells time to the gulf. It is not time to open water. Many of us don't often go to the gulf and like to boat in the river. The river is a mile wide. I consider that open water. Most of Cape Coral canals go to the river.

Most if not all the canals are idle speed only zones....3-6 mph. If you are 45 minutes from your house, in the summer with the heat and humidity, that may seem like an eternity. Also the pop up thunderstorms in the summer with some very active lightning.
I live about 35 minutes from open water, lot to see, and I can fish along the way. I just pick my days in the summertime.
