Most summers the water does turn a bit of either brown or green due to the increased algae in the water caused naturally by the high temps, but the water quality now is due to releases from lake O. I would imagine once the amount of water released decreases back to normal levels, the water quality will improve. The bad news is that that wont be anytime soon. They need to keep releasing water because some of the dikes keeping the water in the lake are old and decaying, so the water releases serve to help alleviate pressure against the dikes. I believe that just a few days ago they increased the amount being released. I wonder how the bad water will effect "season" this year.

The rains will stop in a week or two. The releases from Lake O will stop and the water will be fine. Last year was an anomaly with a rainy winter.

So sad. My hubby and I are looking to buy a condo in Fort Myers/Cape Coral as we are into boating and have lots of friends in the area. The beautiful gulf waters are a big draw for us. Now we are considering looking elsewhere due to this issue. There is also the investment value to consider as well. I hope they can fix this in the near future.

Sad but true. This is an ongoing issue that wont necessarily clear up any time soon. What if next summer is extremely wet? The dikes in Lake O will be a year older and weaker. Surely, more water would need to be released, fouling the ocean, canals, and river. I wouldn't say I regret buying down in SWFL, but the poor water quality has definitely put a damper on enjoying the natural beauty of SWFL. I would say 75% of my trips kayaking or to the beach this summer have been met with brown water.

I think there is a bill in Congress dealing with moving the water from Lake O to the Everglades.
Hope it gets passed soon as I am sure it will take a couple years to get it done.

Last night at Barefoot Beach - dead fish all over the beach. Red tide must be working its way down south. Today there were less dead fish (must have been washed back out off the beach at high tide). Water quality was great though.

I wonder how badly the hurricane will affect things. It can't be good.

Lol. Last night, dead fish everywhere. Today, less dead fish because they got washed into the water, and the water quality was great? Ew.

read newspress online saying releases from lake O weren't as bad as it could have been due to hurricane matthew. Anyone been to the water on Sanibel lately? I plan on being out on the water this weekend and wondering if I should just go north to Boca grande.
