This is not so. NYC's crime rate has went down. Up State NY has very little , LI is very safe with some areas that have problems, but it's not Island wide. Where there is very high crime is Elizabeth NJ..they are on the news more than NY. We also do noy have the large amount of child abductions ( next to none) or the amount of pedophiles as fla. does.

amitygirl, be aware that this thread goes back to 11/22/06

Your right about the abductions. I was shocked the first time I saw all the missing child posters on the local WalMart bulletin board down here.

tommy..yes I saw it was an old post... but I had to chime in since it popped up..NY is not nearly as bad as people preceive it to be. Many think NY is just a city with out realizing it's a huge state and some parts have mountains, farms, beaches.. and tree's too

Don't get me wrong, I love Fla. it's just there are so many things going on down there, it's scary. The abductions freaks me out and in all honesty, we never hear it here. the amount of pedophiles down there is out of control... we have them here also, but not near as many as down there... It was in the news a week or so ago there was one town down there that has 110 pedophiles! How could they put such a large number of these loosers in one town? I am sure the entire area is up in arms.. couldn't even imagine, terrible! ..stay safe

I'm from Long Island, you're preaching to the choir, but you're absolutely right.

This is so very true.

New York City has the lowest crime rate among the largest 25 cities. I think it reached its crime peak in 1992 or sometime before that. In 1993, the police department started a program called COMPSTAT. Violent crime reduced 75 percent since its implementation.

Latest stats have the crime rate of NYC about the same as Provo, Utah.

And New York state is gorgeous.

By the way, New York City's crime rate is 253 and Fort Myers' is 705. Those are 2007 numbers.

Like all cities each of them have problems, although while doing research for a book I am working on I got to look at Ft. Myers through the eyes of a tourist. Ft. Myers and Sanibel/Captiva area have so much beauty to offer both residents and guests. Everything from sandy white beaches, a shell lovers paradise to historic places to visit. Focus on the good things in the area, not the bad.***MOD CUT***

I concur with Janie, who wrote:

When I first came down here from the Chicago area to Cape Coral, I had heard how "ghetto" Cape Coral was.

I had to laugh. Cape Coral is like Beverly Hills compared to the South Chicago ****hole where I grew up.

I'm from an area so ****ty that the national pastime wasn't baseball...or the ubiquitous Midwestern football--it was going out with your buddies to steal a car and then driving over to the West Side of Chicago to run over gangbangers, pimps, and drug dealers.
