I'm looking for some information. We are hopefully going to start construction on a new home soon. My question is this; Do we have to accept the Builder's sub contractor's stock of inventory or can we chose something from a big box store? Example, my wife has been looking at lighting from the Builder's preferred sub contractor but she had already found what she liked and she does not like any of the sub's lighting. She has found things that are close but she feels that they are charging too much for the products.

Can we buy items from a big box store and have the Builder install them or will we be charged extra for the service? Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

You should take a look at the contract you signed with the Builder. It usually states the type of items that are included.
Often, there is a lighting fixture budget. Anything outside that budget would probably be a cost to you.
It would be best to discuss this with the builder to see if you have any options.
Most builders have a very tight contract that does not give the buyer much leeway without extra cost.

Everything is negotiable. Just get everything on paper and signed ahead of time.
