Hi twobeach, I've replied to you in the past. A lot of people only checkout the area in the winter. Nice to see that you saw how things are in the summer.

Overall experience? Disappointed. I think if I had moved down to the east coast I might have been happier. As a Long Islander I miss the nice cold ocean waves of the Atlantic and the pounding surf. The Gulf of Mexico just doesn't do it for me. I spent more time at the beach when I was up north than I do now. If we could have afforded a boat, and that kind of lifestyle things might have been different.

I had to commute to Naples for a decent wage, not much fun. Traffic around Cape Coral was very similar to LI. Lot of time wasted sitting at traffic lights. Lots of aggressive drivers with loud radios. Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy.

Bought in the Cape in 2002. Got out in 2006.

We're up in Punta Gorda now. Whole different vibe. No gangsta wannabes driving around town. A lot quieter.

Hi, Cost of the East Coast is allot higher isn't it?Traffic worse? Tell me more about the Cape. Gangster Wannabees? oh geese, we have distant friends were you are and they like PG. I was worried about the massive body of water pullin the hurricanes into the area. Sorry I said the "H" word. I heard from one family that said it was a very gray area, old folks no kids to play with? The homes are older too? What do you love about PG? Why didn't you go South more? Its more expensive isn't it? Thanx for your time

It just seems like the news is constantly filled with young people getting in trouble. I graduated from Freeport High School in the mid 70s right after the worse of the racial problems in that school. I'm not a stranger to rougher towns. Here's a post explaining why I originally bought in the Cape:http://www.city-data.com/forum/12185175-post195.html
I'm curious what your impressions were, after spending some time there. "The heat wasn't too bad". What else?

geez, compared to most small cities the cape is calm. Being from a small city in NY that list is pretty anemic as far as crime goes.

You ladies presently live there, I don't any more. I'm sure you know your community better than me. The OP was looking for some input from former Long Islanders and NY ers so I replied.

I posted the list simply to explain what I meant by "gangsta wannabes". As I have posted in the past, we never felt unsafe in the Cape, but we also lived in a "decent area". We're much happier now in Punta Gorda, but the OP seems to be set on the Cape, so I limited my comments to it rather then get into a whole discussion on comparing the two areas. (apples to oranges)

I posted this in another thread this morning:
Quote:
A persons age also affects how they view crime. A younger male might feel that another young male he encounters on the street might be trying challenge him. A middle aged guy might not feel threatened at all, and an older person might be worried about being attacked.

One guy walking down the street - three different reactions.

How bad is the crime in an area? Depends who you ask. Opinions are just opinions until they're backed up with facts.
