Hi,
My wife and I are considering a move from Lowell Indiana to Fort Wayne. I would be taking a job in Bryan Ohio and was just looking at a "bigger sized" town that was within an hours drive and FW might be it. We are 48 years old with no kids. Looking at housing on Zillow but having a hard time determining what area to look in. Can someone offer any insight ?
Looking for something quiet in a nice subdivision but close enough to everything. We like to bike, golf and shop. Looking between 250-350k but might consider higher.

Fort Wayne as a whole a pretty good town to live in ?

Thanks in advance

Fort Wayne is a great option for you. Latest population estimate has the city around 260,000 people, easily making it the second largest city in Indiana. The areas on the outside of the city seem to be growing the fastest.

If you are looking to commute to Ohio, you are going to want to zero in your search in the Leo-Cedarville area. Luckily for you, this is one of the fastest growing areas of the county. Many subdivisions in this vicinity, within your price range.

Do a search in that area and see what you get.

Stop and think this through. Which town is going to be your most frequent destination? If you are working in Bryan, you will likely be there an average of 5 days a week or more (10+ hours a week on the road living in Ft. Wayne). If you lived in Bryan, would you be making that many trips a week to Ft. Wayne?

If you only make 1 trip a week to Ft. Wayne and lived more toward Bryan, you could have more available to put toward housing.

Keep in mind also that living in Indiana and working in Ohio will require the filing of state income tax in both states (although I know many people do this).

North side of Ft Wayne wouldn't be a bad commute. For the most part traffic is not bad compared to Chicago / NW Indiana.

There are a lot of subdivisions and multi-acre parcels of land north of Ft. Wayne off of I 69, Coldwater Rd, and Hwy 3. You could even consider Auburn, which is a beautiful small town and very quiet, which is closer to Bryan, and only 15-20 min from Ft. Wayne.

With 300K you should be able to afford a decent house with acreage in the county. Or a really nice house in north Ft. Wayne if you want to be close to shopping.

Is there any brown recluse spiders in the Fort Wayne area?

No. They are native to southern Indiana but not northern Indiana. Their typical habitat seems to end around I-74.

It depends what you consider a lot. I would guess for California, yes we have a lot of thunderstorms. For Florida, not even close. According to the National Weather Service, Fort Wayne averages 39 thunderstorm days per year. That could mean more than 39 thunderstorms but on average there are 39 days with at least 1 thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are the main way we get rain from late June to early September. Steady, all-day rains are common in fall and spring but rather rare in the summer. Afternoon storms on hot, humid July and August days can provide a nice bit of relief from the heat when they happen, though.

Thunderstorms are a somewhat common occurrence, I would say roughly 1 or 2 a week. However, severe storms are a lot less frequent. Especially the more north in the state. Roughly 3-4 severe storms in a given summer.
