Hi all,

Is the area around the corner of NW 15th and Homan a fairly safe place to live? I am a guy in my 30s, new to Ft. Worth, re-located for a job. I found a place right around here that is pretty cool, but the rent is suspiciously low compared to what else I've looked at. Obviously, this neighborhood is a bit older than most and some of the properties are run-down, seems it varies widely from street to street. Clearly a lower income/more working class area--This I dont mind so much, as the place I'm looking at is nice, and it is close enough to bike to work. But is it dangerous?

I drove around, asked a few local residents, and they said they had never had any problems with crime...also I didn't see burgular bars, always a tell-tale sign and the Crime Report stats don't seem off the chart...but the laundromat next to the Homan grocery looked incredibly seedy, and I just got a feelin' the area may be kind of sketchy/on the borderline of safe.

I can spring the 1000 bucks a month for the apartment downtown if I absolutely must, but if this area isnt too bad, it'd be nice to have a house to rent for practically half of that. I'm in Austin every weekend anyway. Much thanks for any advice. I need to make a decision ASAP, so any help is much appreciated.

Fort Worth Police has crime mapping - CrimeMapping.com - National Map

So hopefully that will help you make your decision.

It's northside Fort Worth between downtown and the Stockyards. The crime map that Guingirl suggests makes the area look pretty bad... As a woman, I wouldn't live there...

You can shop around for apartments. My daughter got a place off Hulen and the Trinity River for $650 a month. The place also has gated access. You spend your weekends in Austin but you would like to return home with your stuff intact, wouldn't you?

Wow! Thanks all for your help. I actually wound up siogning on a place at the Firestone on Saturday--and then I checked in this morning and saw the post recommending it. Although it is $$$, it is within three blocks of my office, so it will save tons on gas. Thanks for warning me about the northside area--I figured the rent was too god to be true.
