I've read threads about people doing the opposite but I haven't read much about people moving TO Dallas from within the same metro. I think I might be looking at this type of move several years from now.

Do you have any advice on what to look for before moving and what to keep in mind when I consider where to live?

Schools (even if you don't have children it can come into play with resale)
Commute
Proximity to airports, depending on your travel needs
New construction vs older homes
Walkability

Pretty generic list- but that's about all I got without knowing why and your family situation.

As of right now I would say single, no kids, male in his 30s, moving for a job, probably going to stay in retail (if I can get that to work out). I think I'll be in my 30s by the time I move. I will most likely be moving to an apartment.

Edit: Since people tend to ask what my budget is, it's $750-$1,500 per month on rent.

I've seen how bad it can be on LBJ and Central because I've driven through both on a Friday afternoon when everyone wants to go home. I am only concerned with the morning commute. In the afternoon it won't really matter if it takes a while to go home (because I usually won't have to get there by a certain time). I've been stuck in the metro for 2 hours before on the way back home to see my family.

Then if you are renting find a place as close to your job as you can--preferable on DART rail--and use that to avoid having to be on the roads...
