I will be relocating to the DFW area this summer. My husbands job will be north of Dallas. We are looking to purchase a house under 200k. What are some good places. We thought about Plano. We have school age children so the schools need to be nice.

Plano is one of the more expensive areas..and full of tahoe/suburban soccer moms and materialistic people..but if thats your style then it may suit you...If you are looking for a nice house under 200k try Manisfield south of Arlington, Richland hills north of FW, or Flower Mound.

You may want to repost your question in the Dallas forum to get more answers.

Mansfield would be a least a 90 minute drive to North Dallas as well as the other towns mentioned above.

Plano is indeed a nice place to live, all the amenities you want are close by and the schools are excellent. You may want to consider also Frisco. You would be within a 30-40 minute commute or less from any of these places.

Where are you moving from?

If you are going to stay on the Dallas side , you want to consider Frisco , McKinney , Murphy or Wylie . You can also find good schools and bargains on the suburbs north of Fort Worth were I live .

Between Plano and McKinney is a nice community called Allen. Rapidly growing though, about 75K population.

I agree with the responses. Plano is very materialistic if you ask me -- too many people trying to keep up with the Joneses. If you want more down to earth -- generally speaking -- then go with the recommendations of McKinney, Wylie, Allen, Frisco. Oh -- Dallas County has much higher taxes than Denton or Tarrant Counties which are west and southwest. Real Estate taxes are VERY HIGH here compared to other parts of the country, so you may want to consider something nice in Denton or Tarrant Co. You will also get more bang for your buck in Denton or Tarrant Co. And just so you know...it doesn't mean that the counties or areas are less or worse than Dallas County -- it's just because they aren't in Dallas County! Flower Mound is nice. Grapevine is very nice. Huge Grapevine Mills Mall is there.

Good luck!
