Can anyone offer personal anecdotes/ reviews on these two elementary schools? I've looked through greatschools and schooldigger as well for stats and reviews. Thanks.

I don't have much direct experience with those schools. I've seen good things about North Frederick in the news recently (you might check the Frederick News Post Archives The Frederick News-Post Online - Frederick County Maryland Daily Newspaper ) It has been several years since I knew anyone who worked at Monocacy.

But I'll stick with my comments earlier in response to your more general query and say There are no bad schools in Frederick County if you as a parent are actively involved

We were at North Frederick for a year and generally liked it. My daughter had a good teacher and was happy there. Very diverse student body--probably about 50% white and 50% Everything Else (black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Asian, mixed race, etc.) Also diverse in terms of socio-economic background: some kids come from white-collar families, some blue collar and some lower income. Some parents are very involved, some not at all. One of the biggest drawbacks is that the building is so old and desperately needs replacing--parents have been working very hard to get a new building. That being said, the staff works hard to make the building cheerful and the kids don't really notice the drawbacks. Lots of events throughout the year, such as family movie nights, talent show, school fair, field day, science fair, etc. Class sizes seemed reasonable. Gifted-and-talented program is a big plus.

I think North Frederick got moved up in the modernization program because of the parents pressure. Class sizes are set at the county level so should be similar in all schools
