It's a matter of priorities, I guess.

i think a lot of people use the "finances are tight" excuse to cover up for simply wanting to get things as cheaply as possible. i ask people for where to get the cheapest everything, because I'd rather pay the cheapest price than the highest price. then...i don't have to care about spending money on my smartphone if i want to.
don't assume that she's choosing an iphone over being able to afford formula just cause she wants a good deal on formula.
I agree. It is a simple cost benefit analysis. I'm unwilling to trade $1000/yr for:
mobile web access (incl. social networking, shopping, wikipedia/info gathering, etc.)
mapping programs
cellphone
The convenience isn't worth that much to me. I prefer to plan ahead and accomplish those tasks while at home. Then I can enjoy myself and focus on the present while out and about.
i can always find the cheapest gas because of my phone. it doesn't cost me $1,000/yr, it costs me $360/yr for a data plan. and when i fill up my 17 gallon tank, and save 10 cents per gallon because of my gasbuddy app, that's $1.70 each fillup. this is just one example of how i save.

I so wish that were true -- in our case, an ex-friend borrowed 700 bucks to keep the electric, gas and water on so her kids wouldn't freeze and would have water..... and three weeks later showed up with a new Coach bag and wallet..... apparently she couldn't afford the shoes.
Never did get the money back, either.
It's things like this that make us think the worst of people.... and rarely are we disappointed.

Sounds like there was a lesson there for both parties involved. Lending money to friends and family is touchy business and I don't go there. Usually the ones with the audacity to ask are the ones with the audacity to not ever pay you back. I've got family exactly like this. They're users.

The thing is -- it wasn't the first time we had lent money -- each time we got paid back quickly and with no problem...
But something had changed, obviously.
