I don't buy organic, but for groceries anywhere, you need to do the research yourself -- as in go to the stores and compare. What I pay for anything out here, isn't what someone else pays in Peoria.... groceries are very local, and prices are the same.

Good luck!

I live in NYC, and Stop & Shop carries its own brand of organic milk for about $5.99 a gallon. ShopRite used to carry it too, but I think they stopped.

I'd say $5.99 - $6.99 is a fair price for a gallon, and $3.99 is fair for a half-gallon. If you look around, you should be able to find milk somewhere for those prices (and occasionally cheaper if you shop sales and use coupons).

Large chains? Whole Foods. $4.99 last time I checked.

Regular stores charge a huge premium for organic products. Stores that specialize in that sort of thing are often cheaper.

"cheap" and "best" are contradictory terms. Make that doubly so for something that requires a lot of special handling.

Milk is one of those things where "cheap" is going to indicate lower quality. The best you can do is to find a brand that you like the quality of and shop around to see who offers the same brand for the best price.

i've never seen 4.99 for a gallon organic milk, but maybe in california.

around $6 is the going rate around here. I am surprised to say, where I am in Vermont you can't even buy a gallon of organic milk at the grocery store, only half gallon and it's probably 4 bucks or 4.69. We buy from our farmer directly but that is a different story.

Check the "cow" ratings
The Cornucopia Institute

For big brand names, Stonyfield/Organic valley gets good ratings.

Whole foods milk actually gets good ratings.

Horizon gets poor ratings.

How cheap is cheap?
I buy 1 gal for $4.99. Never saw cheaper than that. Not even at Farmers Market.
I agree... Horizon does not taste good. I don't like Mootopia either (local brand). Organic Valley is pretty good.
I read about Cornucopia, but didn't see it in our stores. Don't know about Stonyfield, because it's much more expensive.
I don't buy it in a box (it has an aftertaste) and I am not too happy with the plastic jar. I would like it in a 1 gal. glass container, but never saw it sold that way.
