I only cook from scratch, and I don't eat out. I'm on a budget.

Some scratch cooking is frugal, some isn't.

There's a decent book on this exact topic, Make the Bread, Buy the Butter: What you
Should (and Shouldn't!) Cook from Scratch to Save Time and Money
, by Jennifer Reese. I got a copy at Half Price Books.

I cook from Scratch for health, the savings is an added bonus. I save time, energy and money by buying in bulk, cooking and baking from scratch.

I'm wondering if anyone makes homemade mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce? I mostly cook and bake from scratch but haven't tried homemade condiments. I don't know that it would be any cheaper to make than buy.

Anybody make homemade pasta to save money?

Unless you're cooking for a platoon... the scale just isn't worth the effort.

otoh... "doctoring up" a store brand whatever to make something else or to just make it
taste better/different will often be worthwhile.

Homemade mayo is really yummy, but it's an armbuster. Everyone I know that's done it has insisted it can't be done in a mixer, it's done by hand with a whisk.

And since it's not pasteurized like store bought, it can go off easily so it must be refrigerated.

I do make homemade tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. Reminds me -- I'm out of horseradish.

I've made homemade mayo in an Oster blender.
The only difficulty was getting it all out - didn't want to waste a drop. Was great.

I agree.

Many times cooking from scratch is more expensive.

I really am shocked so few posters realize that.

Utter nonsense.
In a stand mixer... egg yolks, oil and (the secret)... dijon mustard.
Works in a food processor too.
