It can also be termed: seeing a leaf, but can't see the tree, or the forest!
I'm sure you've observed this crowd, from time to time, they pride themselves on saving money, on this or that, and then? You discover something really odd, funny about these transactions, these attempts to save a dime in one hand, and toss out a quarter from the other hand.
I had a roommate, once, and never had to work, he inherited a bundle of money, and with too much time on his hands, he'd come from the grocery store with his bags of groceries (and a briefcase stocked with coupons) and out would come the calculator to make sure he wasn't gipped out of a nickel or dime. And? If an unforgivable calculating error was made, into his Buick Electra he'd go and back to the store to scold the clerk and demand his refund. A dime? A quarter? And he squandered all that gasoline, in the process!
And do coupons really save you any money anyway, when generics can beat out the price, even with the coupons?
I pick and choose when to use coupons. I eat lots of home made things, so I don't need Hamburger Helper or stouffers lasagna. Sometimes coupons work for me , sometimes they don't. Sale ads from the grocery store are better, because they are on things like fruit, veg, meat, dairy, etc...
The coupon shows drive me crazy.
"I bought 27 doggie treats and we don't even have a dog!" Umm...what?
The amount of time and planning needed is like a job.
Extreme hypermilling - people driving in dangerous ways to get an extra 10-20% more MPG out of their cars but can substantially increase their odds of getting into an accident. You'd need to go a decade or more accident-free while hypermilling to recover the financial loss from an accident and break even.

You could say something similar about not having health insurance.
And one of the worst cases is people not going to the dentist to avoid spending $100 - $1000, then lose their teeth and need special food, for a lifetime cost in excess of $200,000. Penny wise, dollar foolish indeed.

Same goes for forgoing any kind of medical care and ending up with major problems, and also people who skimp on healthy food and eat cheap junk and end up with tons of health issues, obesity, diabetes etc
The most extreme example I heard is a train commuter who routinely got off to buy a newspaper (because where he lived it cost a nickel more than in the city) and rushed back on board. One day it was snowy he slipped under and lost a leg.
we have people who clip coupons and buy products they do not need.
then we have those that go to such great lengths to scrimp those pennies only to cheerish them so much they never invest them to grow so they always remain a penny.
