Amex running a promotion for the next 2 months. Spend $10 at a small shop and get $5 back. Up to 10x. Guessing they're basing size on merchant sales data.
Seems like if the restaurant or shop isn't a large national or regional chain, they'll be part of the promotion. Eating out generally isn't very frugal, but if you're going to do it, might as well get cash back for it.
AMEX runs their "shop small" promotion every year about this time, this isn't something new.

For the last couple of years, it's been a Thanksgiving promotion and usually isn't as lucrative as this.
Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Black Friday), AFAIK, carries with it no special discounts or incentives beyond whatever the businesses themselves offer. But it's still a good move on AmEx's part.

I think this one is better than normal.
And it's nice that it works if you split your purchases in two, so pay $10 for $20 in charges.
$50 credit total on $100 in purchases is kinda small potatoes, but it's something. At the standard 1% rates, it would take you $5,000 in purchases to get that $50.

I’m sure overall the merchants love your split purchases so they have to pay double the swipe fees

haha, you get a $20 charge and ask them to split it in 2?
for me, i dont use any amex cards at all these days, i think i have one or two tucked away. its not worth me trying to start using the cards to make it work for $50.
Got the credit from my favorite sushi place yesterday. So it’s effectively free spring rolls with every purchase? I’m definitely in it to max out the credit then.

Nah just make 2 purchases.

interchange fees is generally a percentage, normally around 2%. Sometimes it's 2%plus $0.10 or something. Honestly if that's an issue for a $10.00 purchase, they have way way bigger issues on their hands.

And besides the higher rates that AmEx charges small businesses I wouldn't be surprised if they charge the discount back to the merchant. I know several small businesses that don't take AmEx because of the costs.
