I was reading the "No car, no problem" thread and was wondering...do you feel safe walking to do your errands, etc. where you live? I am looking to move to another city and I usually check apartment addresses on a site that gives a score for convenience (nearness to groceries, pharmacies, etc.). While a given address may, indeed, be convenient, it may or may not be safe to walk in these areas due to high traffic or crime. Is it usually safe for a woman to walk alone (during daylight hours) to run errands or walk to work?
It all depends on where you live, as well as your own personal comfort level. I've never had any problems and have always felt safe walking in my neighborhoods.
I feel safe where I am now (town of 12,000 or so), day or night, but the grocery store is all of 3 blocks away, streets are well lit, with nice sidewalks for walking.
This lady lives in a small town of 5,500. Feel completely safe, day or night, running errands or in my home...
During the summer tourism season, I've got to be careful while riding my bike, though. Some tourists get sun-dazzled and are apt to do unexpected things in their cars...

I lived in a big city that was safe to run errands day or night, Singapore. It is really a pretty nice place to live, and many folks from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and China (HK) move there for the 'safety' factor.
Their public 'Caning' policy seems to work pretty well to keep things in order and women safe.
