We have a very small yard, and the Scott's Hand Spreader is more than enough for distributing the occasional fertilizers. Problem is, the darn thing always seems to choke up, clog, to the point where I can turn the dial anymore. It's as if the ferts clog inside. Granted, I usually have it set low to like 2 or so ,which makes for a smaller opening for the ferts to be dispensed.
Does anyone else experience this? Or recommend alternative manufacturers or perhaps another item for distributing fertilizers evenly over a small area.
Mine has more like a tab you slide up and down rather than a dial. For me I just rinse it every once in a while. So far it's lasted probably 5 years or so.
Mine is a push from behind spreader, with a variety of settings, have had it for over ten years, it is simple to use and effective, as well as being rather cheap to purchase, less than $25, and have been using it on my lawn as well as veggie garden (about 4000 ft/sq), my lawn, including veggie garden and fenced in part of back yard for the dogs is a bit over 2.5 acres.
with pulverized product and disposable gloves...
a handful sprinkled or thrown works fine
I've done this but it spreads so unevenly and will probably do it many time over again. I always tie a handkerchief over my nose and mouth when I use the hand held spreader on my small front yard.
Maybe I will try the Earthway brand. I'm not very good spreading it by hand -- tend to clump it up and burn areas
