Hi,
I am new to gardening and lawn care. The front of our house is atrocious. I have a huge oak tree with leaves and acorns everywhere. Grass does not grow in that area. I don't know if I should just cover the entire area w/ mulch or have the oak removed. I really just want a neat front yard.
Oaks are beautiful and life-sustaining trees. My neighbor has two kestrels nesting in his oak.. Remove it and replace it with sterile "neat" sod, but that would be such a shame to remove a cool tree and feature. How about plastic grass? It's neat.

Are you tending the area around it? Do you feed the grass or supplement the soil?
I have three live oaks and all have grass around them - st. Augustine.
You might try raking up the leaves and acorns. One of our trees put out a lot of acorns this year, but the squirrels help take care of that.
Don't give up - ask someone at a nursery or have someone come look at it.
I need to have the tree trimmed. Will the St augustine grass require a lot of water? I heard that's the best grass for Texas climate.
Seriously, why do you even want grass under the tree?? It looks better without it...and grass would probably be pretty scraggly in that area. Just use mulch or low-sun flowers or groundcover. Forget about grass. (And don't just go trimming an oak tree--they can be very susceptible to oak wilt when cut.)
