It looks like I got carried away and accidentally ordered pea seeds. I've tried to grow peas in zone 6/7 before had had AWFUL luck. The seeds grew, but I got maybe 3-4 pods per plant. I tried sugar snap peas and snow peas and even used inoculant. Can you tell me how to get big yields from pea plants?
To begin with, use old soil, not new compost. I prefer shelling peas and mine kept producing up to a week ago, they were a second planting after a late summer crop, replanted in the same bed from seeds from those plants.
I grew peas for several years in zone 6. I planted by St. Patrick's Day, maybe earlier if it was going to be an early spring. I used inoculant once or twice, then figured the soil probably had enough of the bacteria in it that I didn't need it anymore. I don't think I saw any real difference between using it and not using it. Three to four pods per plant sounds about right, at least in my experience, although I think I got a bit more one time when I used a little Miracle Gro Bloom Booster as an experiment.
I used mainly Wando variety since they are supposed to be more heat tolerant than other varieties. I found even planting before St. Patty's Day, it was a nail-biter waiting to see how much the plants would produce before the heat fried them in May.
I seem to have luck with sugar snap peas. I only need a couple of them to germinate & climb the trellis, they do the growing & spreading all on their own. I don't use fancy seeds either, just the typical seed packets from big box stores.
I use raised bed & the same soil year after year. Right before spring planting, I shovel previous year's grass clippings from my compost pile & mix them with soil really good. Other than that, I have a timer that irrigate them at 4:00am for 15 minutes, then the sun takes care of rest.
If you're still not sure, PM me and I'll swap other seeds with you since I have not bought my sugar snap pea seeds yet.
