Lots of one-eyed snakes in Amsterdam.

I see all of those here in Orange County except garter snakes. On Wednesday, I was riding my bike and saw my first snake of the year...a BIG gopher snake, well over 3 feet long. I like snakes and always stop riding and stomp around to get them to leave the trail so the next biker won't run them over.

Out in California the only poisonous snake is the rattlesnake and they are unmistakable, so I encourage friends who find other kinds of snake in their yard to just leave them alone.

Except or accept? To me, a yard with snakes is a healthy yard. If they are there, they have a food supply. I don't think I've had rattlers in the yard, but I've seen their shed skins not far away.

Pitty the poor snake in my yard. I'd have some kind of girly fit and beat it to death with the garden fork, rake, or shovel. Not really, but sometimes I overreact.

About two years ago, I spent a really long time snipping a little garter snake out of my garden netting. He, or she, certainly didn't make the job easy. No nicks! That was really hard because the snake was bulging through the netting.

There's no longer any plastic in my yard, except for the plant pots.

I give the rattlers a pass unless we have one in camp or in the yard.

I found a small snake in my yard the other day - in fact, he was on my patio. I shooed him off the patio and along his way. I consider snakes to be part of our ecosystem and he was just doing his snake job.

Now - if I saw a poisonous snake in my yard, I might have a different reaction, but I've never seen a poisonous snake in the yard so I can't say for certain what I'd do. Non poisonous snakes have my blessing.
