This is planted in full sun; leaves are Acicular (needle shaped) and smooth. At one time gayfeather was planted in this area. Can this be liatris???

Looks like it might be but the height is throwing me. Generally 3 -4 feet tall.

Liatris stems are stiffer and the leaves are thicker. Finally, Liatris would have shown buds long ago when the plants were much smaller.
