6 ft tall, slender, Liatris? (leaves, plants, weed)

This is planted in full sun; leaves are Acicular (needle shaped) and smooth. At one time gayfeather was planted in this area. Can this be liatris???

Definitely not Liatris. I think it's a weed.

Looks like it might be but the height is throwing me. Generally 3 -4 feet tall.

Looks like marestail to me.

Liatris stems are stiffer and the leaves are thicker. Finally, Liatris would have shown buds long ago when the plants were much smaller.
