I see no reason why you couldn't lay your 2 X 10's directly on the sleepers and forgo the stringers shown here, although you will end up with a bit of flexing in your walkway.

This is exactly what I have and it has been down since before I bought here. It is pressure treated wood and has the cross pieces just as you described. I do paint it with deck paint however.
