I've got an area of my lawn that is like a mini valley or a dip. When we get 1-2 inches of rain it seems to pool up with water and the grass doesn't come on strong there. I fertilize and everything, too. When it gets hot, it attracts these insects that look like fruit flies. I haven't measured the soil content, but it seems like there's a lot of clay soil there.

I was wondering what you thought of getting one of those double pogo sticks that have those holes at the end to punch holes in the lawn esp. in that area. I don't have a huge lawn so I wouldn't have to rent one of those core aeration machines. Would that improve the ability of the soil to grow grass? Or at least the water would drain down as opposed to just pooling.

If there's a lot of clay there in the sunken area then I think punching holes in the ground isn't going to make any difference. The holes will just fill up with water with nowhere for it to go, and will sit there and stagnate (and attract even more insects) and the area will still be soggy and nasty.

Personally, if it was mine, I would fill in the whole sunken area with a load of new soil, enough to bring it all up so it's level with the rest of the lawn, or even a tiny bit higher, and then reseed it for new grass.
